2010 Gold Coast Open RESULTS

WELL DONE Team!!! City West TKD had a small representation at the 2010 Gold Coast Open Championships at the Carrara Sports Stadium over weekend 15 & 16 May 2010... winning 3 Gold Medals and 1 Bronze from 4 entrants was pretty amazing results in anyones terms. Head Coach, Frank De Pasquale couldn't have been more proud of his talented squad – sparring and poomsae.
Saturday's contest saw golden girl Lauren "Bundy" Thom compete before family and friends in the Female Black Belt U/68kgs division. No doubt the old home town advantage gave her the upper hand... and despite busting a knuckle first round, she went on to win her first fight 17:7 and later tko'd her second opponent 16:5 to win Gold in the finals.
Meanwhile, teammate Olivia Karvounis had an uphill battle all the way in the 14-17yrs Female Black Belt division...primarily fighting a ferocious fever and secondly, sourcing the energy to take on 3x3 round fights to the end. Surprisingly, Olivia managed to pull it together (well, for a short time only), beating her first opponent from Melbourne 15 points to 3; placing her in the semi-finals, where she matched up with a young lass from WA. But despite dominating the entire bout, the points were just not there for Olivia...settling for a controversial Bronze!
Sunday’s action started early for us, with 13yr old Black Belt 2nd Poom, Carla De Pasquale displaying near perfect poomsae to the technical judge’s delight....clearly a standout performance to win a well deserved Gold medal.
And it was great to see sparring sensation, 12yr old Bailey Lewis fire up for this meet in the Male Red U/34kgs division ...taking on 2 Queenslanders to convincingly win Gold in the end. He beat his first opponent 3:1 and second opponent in the finals 20:2. TOP STUFF!!!
