DOMINATING STATE GAMES

Tuesday March 23, 2010 1:51AM

IT was great to be part of the Victorian Summer Sparring Taekwondo Championships over weekend 20 & 21 March 2010 at the State Netball & Hockey Stadium in Parkville, where City West TKD placed amongst Victoria’s leading Sports TKD clubs, celebrating 12 GOLD 5 SILVER & 5 BRONZE medal wins.

The 2 day program enabled our Tournament fighters to measure their performances following intensive pre-season training, giving CWT coaches an opportunity to evaluate their team’s efforts early in the season. AND clearly, our Tournament fighters are set for another huge year of sporting action with standout results achieved across our various fighting sectors – "Side Kicks", "Junior Mights" & "Senior Raptors".

DAY 1 highlights included many outstanding displays from our coloured belt fighters, particularly by young “Side Kick”, Master Nathan Marley. Demonstrating early, perfect listening skills is all it takes to successfully convert instruction to victory points...earning himself great respect and admiration from his opponent, coaches and club supporters. Nice one Nate! Although fellow teammate, Red Belt - Kelvin Camilleri took an all together different tactical approach on match day...unleashing his full on explosive style to assert his dominance over two challenging Victorian opponents. In the end, it was another gold medal win for our young pocket dynamite.

CWT “Junior Mights” - Emma O’Boyle and Taner Ismail were amongst our best players in the Intermediate Red Belt divisions, with Emma achieving a gallant Bronze Medal as well as topping the club's highest score for the day (19 pts); whilst Taner gave his all, displaying gutsy determination and smart strategic play to outbeat his finals opponent, taking home Gold. Red Belt stars, Jamison Biden and Bailey Lewis also proudly dominated their respective divisions, both claiming 1st place wins. AND WELL DONE to Joe Harsley who fought the fight of his lifetime beating his first opponent 11:10. Unfortunately for Joe, he was forced to withdraw in the finals due to injury...but what a terrific first up performance! WAY TO GO!!!

Another standout competitor (pictured right)…new kid on the block “Senior Raptor”- Rupin Mendiratta was absolutely inspirational to watch, thanks to terrific coaching and the power of 'self belief'. This young man simply backed himself against a much more experienced player, to clinch his first State Title Championship as a novice Blue Belt fighter. Way to go Rupin! Looks like Mim may've even been inspired to take up the Raptor challenge...now that's good work!!!

Meanwhile DAY 2 focused on Victoria's Black Belt fighters, who once again put on an exciting public showcase of Sports TKD action for all to enjoy.

CONGRATULATIONS to 12yrs old Dilan Ismail, experiencing junior Black Belt division for the first time, despite having a highly decorated coloured belt career. He successfully took out the popular junior male Black Belt division by beating all three of his distinguished opponents...affirming the 'Dilstar' status of old!

Likewise, female Black Belt sensations - Olivia Karvounis & Lauren Thom were just as impressive, both comfortably dominating their respective intermediate divisions to win 1st place Gold. Also, WELL DONE to Rachael Thomas who enjoyed her first State Championship experience, claiming victory with a Gold medal winning performance. As you can see...GIRLS RULE here!!!

WELL DONE TEAM!!! It was a great effort by all our fighters. As always, many thanks to Tournament Team Manager - Jerry Ismail, our terrific coaches – Frank, Jerry, Wayne & Troy, the fighters and the supporters - families and friends of City West TKD for taking the time out to come along and experience what all the tournament fuss is about at City West. As you can see, it’s every bit worth the venture!!!

Finally, special thanks to club sponsor, ULTRA IMAGE PHOTOGRAPHY for attending the 2 day event in support of our players. For all those interested, photos can be viewed and purchased online by visiting www.ultraimagephotography.com.au.
